A Day In The Life with Christy Johnson

Like a lot of working moms out there, I strive for balance between my job as a portrait photographer and my job as a mom. On this day, my daughters are tracked out of school (they attend year round school, which we love!). I try to slow down a bit during track out to spend a little quality time with my girls. With a busy baby photography studio, it doesn’t always happen, but luckily I have an amazing partner in my husband. He helps keep us all steady and moving forward.

Case in point, he made me breakfast this morning – two eggs sunny side up! He’s working from home this morning so he can hang out with our girls while I head into the studio for a bit.

Today I am photographing a nine day old newborn. He is a dream for me, and we are finished up in about two hours!

After the newborn and his family head home, my husband brings Macy and Claire to the studio before heading to work himself. They don’t mind coming to the studio when necessary, especially when it means lollipops and extra iPad time while Mommy wraps up a few things!

Lunchtime! The three of us head across the street to have lunch at my favorite local restaurant, Gonza Tacos y Tequila. Today we share some Nachos Gabachos with Tinga Chicken – yummy!

After lunch, we head into downtown Raleigh to Marbles Kids Museum. We’ll usually hang around and play a bit outside, but it’s freezing today so we pose for a quick snapshot with Gandhi, and then head inside!

Inside is an amazing two levels of everything a kid could ever want, from water play to giant building blocks and everything in between. Today, Macy is excited to build a little “house” for her teeny stuffed animals, and Claire beelines for the gymnastics rings. We typically spend 3-4 hours here each time we come, and we still never manage to do everything!

I always say that one day, we’re going to stop and get hot, fresh doughnuts at Krispy Kreme, which we pass on our way home. Today is the day. Doughnuts before dinner? Mom of the year!

When we finally arrive home, it’s time to toss together a simple dinner of spaghetti and salad. Claire decides she wants to be picky and declares, “I’m not eating any spaghetti, I’m only eating salad!” Okay then, if you insist! (For the record, she ate all of her salad AND spaghetti.)

Daddy is out playing disc golf tonight, so it’s just us girls. Macy, our resident artist, makes place cards for the three of us.

After dinner, it’s time for bath and bed. The girls read quietly to themselves in their beds while I brew a cup of chai and get cozy on the couch with a book. It won’t be long before I head up to bed myself, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

For me, photography is about sharing that unconditional love with other mothers and their children. I want our children to see how fiercely they are loved, from birth onward, forever and always, no matter what. I’m devoted to photographing the connection between mama and baby that exists from the moment she knows she’s pregnant. It’s why I do what I do.

  1. Loved this read. But, truthfully I love reading all the posts on CM. This one was super close to home; not because I live in North Carolina (I don’t). I live in Roswell, GA, but when you recognize things in photos (Krispy Kreme) it just makes you feel at home.
